External Poetry Competitions 2018

Competitions are a big part of any writers career. Bellow is a list of a few competitions being held in 2018.


The Poetry Kit Spring Competition offers a first prize of £100 and a second of £50. The judge, Jim Bennett, author of more than 70 books, is a poet who has won several awards for his works. There are no style or length restrictions. The deadline is midnight April 16th, 2018. Entry fees are as follows; 1 poem: £3.50; 3 poems: £8; 5 poems: £10.

The Early Works Press Poetry Competition 2018 offers a chance to be published in a paperback anthology and £100. Deadline is 30th April 2018 and is open to anyone over 16. Entry fees; 1 poem: £3.50; up to 6 poems: £15.


The Industry Prize held by Frontier Poetry see’s a chance to be ‘read by some of the most influential persons across our industry’ whilst being up for a chance to win $3,000 USD and publication on Frontier. Entry is $20.00 USD. Deadline: 15th May 2018.

The Bridport Prize 2018 is offering a £5,000 prize and publication in an anthology. Deadline is 30th May 2018. Entry fee: £9.00 per poem.


Mad Like Us poetry, illustration and short story/ flash fiction competition is now open with a deadline of June 7th. They are looking for ‘unpublished poems up to 30 lines based in some way on emotional distress or mental ill health’. The prize is to be published in an anthology, along with a first place cash prize of £100 and 5 copies of the book. The fee is £4 per entry.

Bread and Roses Poetry Award closes 8th June 2018 and is free to enter. Entries should broadly deal with themes relevant to working class life, politics, communities and culture. There are five first place prizes of £100 up for grabs, and a chance to be published in an anthology later in the year. Winners will be asked to attend an award ceremony on the 13th July in Durham.

The Poem of the North competition held by the Northern Poetry Library and supported by the Poetry Book Society closes on the 17th of June 2018. If accepted your poem will be posted on a creative digital format, and five poets will receive full PBS Membership.


The Canterbury Festival Poet of the Year Competition is now open and closes 18th July 2018. The competition holds a prize of £200 for first place, £100 for second place, and £50 for third place – and a bottle of sparkling wine. Entry fee is £5 per poem.


The Manchester Writing Competition is open for both fiction and poetry entries, each holding their own prizes of up to £10,000. The deadline for submissions is 14th September 2018. Entry will come with a fee of £17.50.

The Award for New Poets gives emerging poets the chance to win a cash prize of up to $2,000 USD and publication on Frontier Poetry. Poets should have no more than 2 collections published. Contest opens on July 15th and closes September 15th, 2018.


The Troubadour International Poetry Prize 2018 closes on the 22nd October 2018 and offers a first prize of £2,000, a second prize of £1,000 and a third prize of ‘a week-long creative-writing course at the arvon centre of your choice with thanks to arvon’. The entry fee is £6 for the first poem and £4 for subsequent poems.


The Frontier Open: One Poem opens on September 15th and has a deadline of November 15th. This award holds a prize of $5,000 USD and publication on Frontier Poetry. Note: this award holds emerging and established poets in equal measure.
